Installation

Congratulations, you finally have the approval for your new data center! The budget is finished, you've chosen your infrastructure and the quotes are rolling in. The vendor has been chosen, so now all that's left is to install the equipment and turn it all on, right? Seems like a simple decision...just let the manufacturer perform the install and start-up. However, whether you're updating an aged facility or building an entirely new one, the question of, "how much will it cost?" always takes center stage. When faced with the higher cost of a professional installation or a third party company, it's tempting to take short cuts in an effort to save money.

Consider the following all too common scenario:

SuperCo waited months for the budget to have their old data center re-engineered, purchased and delivered. Their old equipment cost so much to operate, that they were forced to shave costs from the quotes wherever possible. In doing so, they chose to use a third party company for the assembly along with their own I.T. staff. Building the new HACS (Hot Aisle Containment System) and installing the racks looked to be easy enough, and the manufacturer's cost was $3000 more than the third party option. Having decided to use a third party company, the build-out was originally scheduled to be a 5-day event, but it's now Friday and there are still racks on pallets and power whips hanging everywhere! The I.T. staff began working overtime and managed to complete the majority of the assembly by Monday morning when the manufacturer's engineers arrived. Once on site, the engineers determined that the doors to the pods would not mount as the racks and ceiling tiles had been assembled incorrectly. The entire first row now needed to be moved two full inches to allow the remaining parts to be assembled correctly. The start-up was delayed an additional week, as the I.T. staff, already behind in their daily tasks, could no longer work on the project and the third party company could not allocate the resources to correct the installation mistakes until midweek. Another Friday would come to pass before the servers could be installed and production restored. The additional man-hours, overtime and production delays cost SuperCo more than dollars, as the additional downtime affected their customers as well.

Whether it's time for a refresh or a completely new build-out, UNS has the factory trained and certified staff on-hand to manage, install and commission your new data center. Understanding that each customer and data center is unique, UNS Professional Services Team utilizes a M.A.P.
